The figures are participating in the yearly Busójárás, a festival with Serbian origins held at the end of the Catholic Carnival season. The town’s men dress up as “busós,” and the women wear lace veils as witches. This centuries-old tradition includes the busós chasing women around the festivities, sending a coffin that represents winter into the river, and a massive bonfire.
